First of all you need to be in range of your local gym, must be level 5, and depending on if your team (talked about in choosing a team) controls it or not will affect the Prestige rating of the gym. Prestige is the amount that determines how difficult it will be to take over a gym. Training Pokémon at your gym will increase its Prestige but losing battles to other teams’ Pokémon will lower it.
To begin a battle tap on the gym and in the bottom right hand corner you will see a boxing glove. Tap on the boxing glove then select which Pokémon you want to train up or use to take over the gym (not sure which Pokémon is a good match check here). Once you’ve selected the Pokémon you want to use, tap GO which will bring you into battle. You need to tap on the opponent your battling to use your Pokémon’s basic attack, and you can swipe left or right to dodge your opponents attack. As you use your normal attack, you’ll notice some blue bars filling up below your health in the top left hand corner. When you fill up a bar, you can hold down on the screen to use a special attack. Continue with these moves until the battle is over and you move on to the next opponent(if there is one) or if you lose. If you need to change between Pokémon during battle simply tap the up down arrow on the bottom right hand corner to switch.
Whether you win or lose you’ll need to heal your Pokémon. To do so, go into items then select a potion, super potion or hyper potion to heal your Pokémon and try again or leave it there as a defender.
- Potion: 20 HP
- Super Potion: 50 HP
- Hyper Potion: 200 HP
